What Can I Expect When Donating Blood?

The entire donation process, from registration to release, will take 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the type of donation:

Whole Blood
45 minutes to 1 hour

Red Cell + Double Platelet
1.5 to 2 hours

Plasma + Platelet
1.5 hours


Automated Red Cells
1 to 1.5 hours

Single Platelet
1 hour 20 minutes

Single Platelet
1 hour 20 minutes


Red Cell + Platelet
1.5 to 2 hours

Double Platelet
1.5 to 2 hours


The Blood Donation Process:

Step 1: Register
Register online, over the phone, or at our reception area. When you arrive, please be prepared to provide us with valid identification, such as a driver’s license or your MKBC Donor ID.  

Step 2: Answer
Answer a medical history questionnaire at home using iScreen®, or at the blood drive/donation center.

Step 3: Check
A trained medical screener will check your blood pressure, temperature, and iron level.

 

Step 4: Collection
You will now undergo the physical collection of blood.

Step 5: Refresh
You will be served refreshments and asked to relax in our canteen area.*

After you donate blood, please continue to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid exercise, smoking, and alcohol for 24 hours. Remember to enjoy the feeling of knowing that your gift is saving lives, right here in our community. Don’t forget to schedule your next appointment.
