Matching Gifts

Many companies match charitable gifts made by employees or retirees, which can double or even triple the value of your gift. Some companies even match gifts made by spouses of employees and corporate directors. Ask your human resource or community relations department if your company offers a match. There are varying processes at each organization for completing the match, and the human resource department will be able to help you learn the process at your organization.

financial objective

Gifts of Securities

Miller-Keystone Blood Center (MKBC) can accept gifts of securities electronically. There are advantages to making a philanthropic gift to a favorite charity like MKBC. In fact, appreciated securities held for more than one year may provide benefits to you and may provide a way to help you to achieve your long-term financial objective of reducing your income and estate taxes.

  • A charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted securities as of the date of the gift.
  • An opportunity to eliminate capital gains tax that would ordinarily become due if you had sold the appreciated securities on the open market and donated the proceeds from the sale to charity.
  • An ability to claim your charitable deduction against up to 30% of your adjusted gross income and any unused deductions can be carried forward over the next five years.
  • If you have securities that have declined in value over the years and are interested in gifting them to a charitable organization like MKBC, you may find it more advantageous to sell the securities first and contribute the proceeds as opposed to gifting the securities outright. This strategy could allow you to claim a deduction for both the loss from the sale of the securities as well as the charitable gift.
  • In addition, if you are considering gifting stock that is subject to a cash merger or tender offer, it is important to consider the tax on the capital gain even though you may transfer the shares before the tender offer became effective.
  • You should always consult with your tax/financial advisors before initiating a charitable gift arrangement.
